Update: The NYPD to Arrest Banksy!
Last week I told you about the amazing art truck that Banksy made, which is touring NYC right now. Well, the NYPD and Mayor Bloomberg are *not* impressed. So not impressed, in fact, that they decided to [attempt to] deprive New Yorkers of Banksy’s incredible street art. If you can believe it, they’ve put out a warrant for his arrest and have a “big” task force wasting tax-payer dollars trying to hunt him down so they can “out” him and book him.
Bloomberg: “Graffiti does ruin people’s property* and it’s a sign of decay and loss of control,” the mayor said. “Art is art, and nobody’s a bigger supporter of the arts than I am. I just think there are some places for art and there are some places [not for] art. And you running up to somebody’s property or public property and defacing it is not my definition of art. Or it may be art, but it should not be permitted. And I think that’s exactly what the law says.”
*or, in this case, add millions of dollars in property value…
According to the NY Post, the mayor’s office says the city will remove any Banksy work on public property, such as the 9/11 installation at the Brooklyn Promenade. Supposedly, (but this sounds super far-fetched to me), they could pull over one of the drivers of Banksy’s trucks and transfer him to a CIA black site until Banksy turns himself in.
Just when I was so proud to be a New Yorker, the NYPD had to go and ruin it for all of us. Ah, well.
