Healing Chakras

Radiate Inner Beauty

By Debbie Danbrook

What are Chakras?

Chakras are energy centers in the body.  We all have an energy field around our bodies (called our 'aura') and some people are said to be able to see this energy as a swirling ball of light.  Chakra is a Sanskrit word that means "wheel of light".

Where are my Chakras?

There are seven main chakras starting at the base of the spine and moving up to the crown of the head.  Each of the chakras corresponds to an area in the physical body and each has a different function and feeling.  They are the link between the subtle energy field and the activities of the body.  The chakras are connected to the physical body mainly through the endocrine glands and the spinal system.

Spa 101 Here is a  brief overview of the seven chakras.  Certain aspects may differ, depending on which system you work with.  Also keep in mind that the chakras are constantly changing, with each breath, each moment.

  • The root chakra is at the base of the spine and is coloured red.  This chakra deals with life energy and grounds our spirit in the material world.  The element corresponding to this chakra is earth and the herb or incense associated with it is cedar.

  • The second chakra is orange and is found at the sacral, just below the belly button. It deals with how we create in the world, with pleasure, well-being, sexuality and abundance.  The element is water and the herb or incense is gardenia.

  • The third chakra, yellow, is centred in the solar plexus.  It deals with intellect, intuition and our lessons to be learned in life.  It is ego, self-esteem, confidence, decision making and personal power.  The element for this chakra is fire and the herb or incense is carnation.

  • The fourth chakra is green and is at our heart.  This green chakra deals with heart and emotion; it is the seat of our soul.  It is love, joy, relationship and peace.  The element is air and the herb or incense is lavender or jasmine.

  • The fifth chakra is found at the throat and is blue.  This chakra deals with voice, speaking our truth, integrity, will-power and how we move ourselves forward in the world.  The element is sound and the herb or incense is frankincense.

  • The sixth chakra is purple and is at our brow; it is often referred to as the third eye.  It deals with compassion and intuition; wisdom, discernment and imagination.  The element is light and the herb or incense is mugwort.

  • The seventh chakra is at our crown and is white light.  This chakra deals with our connection to the spiritual realm and connects us with beauty and universal energy.  The element associated with this chakra is information and the herb or incense is lotus.

The Healing Power of Chakras

The chakras are a conduit for healing. Although only some people can see the energetic field that exists around all living beings, we can all feel this energy.  Here is a simple exercise to try:

  • Rub your hands together vigorously and then separate them a few inches apart
  • Softly bring them in and out and you should be able to feel a slight resistance
  • You are feeling a small ball of energy moving between your hands
  • Imagine this energy extending outwards around your body and also imagine this energy full of light
  • As you learn more about the chakras you can begin to work with them to help clear and balance your own energetic field

Through the appropriate type of music, breath work, healing hands energy work and body work such as yoga and tai chi we can experience profound healing through working with our chakras.  Combining different healing modalities, for example healing music with body work, can greatly accelerate the healing process. The frequencies of some types of healing music will help to balance the flow of electromagnetic energies of the chakra system.  There are excellent training courses in chakra related healing work, available in many locations these days. If you aren’t familiar with any groups working with the chakras you can find a wealth of information on the internet.
